India Vs Sri Lanka, Match 5
Yet another terrific match in
the ongoing tri-series at Adelaide came to an end. India almost won another thriller.
In the end Sri Lanka didn’t win nor did India lose it. The match ended in a tie
with teams ending at identical score in allotted 50 over, 236/9. Kudos to brilliant
batting by Gambhir (91 runs off 106 balls) and captain cool – Dhoni (58 runs off
69 balls)!
The facial expression of
Jayawardena, Captain of Sri Lankan team said it all. Although the match ended
in a tie, he sure felt defeated. Some strong performance from Lankan batsmen went
in vain. Dinesh Chandimal scored 81 runs
(91 balls) and Mahela Jayawardena 43 runs (49 balls). It needs to be noted that
Indian bowlers did a good job in restricting the Lankans. Vinay Kumar was the
pick of the bowlers with the figures 3/46. It was good to see Irfan Pathan back
in the team he picked 1 wicket and R Ashwin picked 2 wickets.
In the previous match it was
the same ground and India faced a similar situation. India needed 13 runs off
the last over. It was Dhoni and his dazzling batting performance which did the
trick. India won the game by 4 wickets. It was India’s second victory against
the Australians during the current tour and the first in the ODI format.
India seems to be putting in
their best efforts to reclaim the lost honour after being whitewashed in the
test series against the Australian’s. But everyone around seems to be still
busy finding faults and sniffing for new controversies. The media is trying to
blow out of proportion some of the team decisions like the rotation policy and
also what they suspect a rift between Dhoni and Gambhir. Yester year players are
also trying to score some brownie points with their expert comments on these
issues. Well everyone is entitled for expressing their thoughts and suggestion,
it’s fair and square. But I hope it doesn’t lead to an unhealthy situation.
Some of the comments and
suggestions does make sense and needs to be looked into. Rotation policy in the
ongoing ODI series is something which bothers me too. One of the top three
batsmen are currently being asked to sit out and being played in rotation. By
this logic Gambhir is supposed to be dropped for the next game. Now that would
sound absurd! A player being made to sit out in the next game having scored to
90+ scores in back to back games.
Indians now after four games are
on top of the table with 10 points. They still have four more games in the
league stage and the next match for them is against Australia in Brisbane on 19th
February 2012.
